Phones: what they're worth used

Phones lose value faster than almost anything else you own, and on a predictable schedule. The model, its storage, its condition, and how long until the next release decide most of the price.

How fast phones lose value

BankMyCell's 2021–2022 depreciation report found iPhones lost about 15% of their value a year on average over their first four years, and Android flagships about 32% a year. That gap is why iPhones usually resell for a larger share of their original price.

What moves the price

Model and storage come first: a 256 GB version sells for more than the 128 GB one, and Pro and Max models hold value better than base models. Then condition (screen and back glass, battery health), whether it's unlocked, and whether the box and accessories are included.

Carrier-locked, financed, or blacklisted phones sell for far less, and many buyers won't touch them.

Where to sell

Trade-in programs and buyback sites are the fastest; a private sale on a marketplace usually pays more but takes longer. Compare a trade-in offer with recent sale prices for your exact model before accepting it.

Frequently asked questions

Do iPhones hold their value better than Android phones?

Yes, on average. BankMyCell's data shows iPhones losing about 15% a year over their first four years against about 32% a year for Android flagships.

When is the best time to sell a phone?

Many sellers aim for before the next model launches, when fewer upgraders are selling the same phone. Check recent sale prices for your model either way.

Does battery health affect resale value?

Yes. Buyers check it, and a low battery health reading lowers what a phone sells for.
