Electronics: what they're worth used

Electronics lose value as newer models arrive, but not all at the same speed. Laptops and phones fall fastest; well-regarded cameras and lenses hold up better; consoles track their generation.

How fast electronics lose value

Swappa's June 2026 figures put Apple Silicon MacBooks at roughly 15–20% value loss a year and Windows laptops nearer 30%. Game consoles hold value while their generation is current and drop when the next one arrives. Camera bodies lose value as new models launch, while good lenses often hold their price for years.

What buyers check

Specs (processor, memory, storage), condition, and whether everything works. For laptops, battery cycle count and screen condition; for cameras, shutter count and sensor condition; for consoles, controllers and the original box. Original chargers and accessories add to the price.

Before you sell

Sign out of accounts, remove activation locks, and wipe the device. A locked laptop or console is close to worthless to a buyer.

Frequently asked questions

Do MacBooks hold their value?

Better than most laptops. Swappa's June 2026 figures put Apple Silicon MacBooks at about 15–20% value loss a year, against about 30% for Windows laptops.

Is it better to sell electronics before a new model comes out?

Often. Once a replacement is out, buyers can choose the newer model, and more owners are selling the old one.
