Furniture: what they're worth used

Most used furniture sells for a fraction of its price new: it's bulky, hard to ship, and buyers have plenty of choice. The exceptions are well-known designer pieces and high-end office chairs, which keep a strong resale market.

What holds value

Recognizable designs from established makers, such as Herman Miller, Steelcase, Vitra, and USM, resell well because buyers know what they're getting and can check for authenticity. Mass-market furniture usually sells for much less than it cost.

What buyers check

Condition (upholstery wear, stains, wobble), completeness, and proof it's genuine: labels, serial tags, or a receipt. For office chairs, buyers check which adjustments work and the size. Pickup matters too: local buyers will pay more if they can see it first.
