Home & Storage: what they're worth used

Storage furniture is everywhere secondhand, so most of it sells cheaply. Modular systems from known designers are the exception: buyers can add to them, and they hold their value.

What holds value

Modular systems such as USM Haller and String shelving keep a resale market because they can be reconfigured and extended. Iconic organizers from design brands also sell well. Mass-market flat-pack storage usually resells for a small fraction of its price, partly because it's often damaged in disassembly.

Selling tips

List the exact dimensions and configuration, include every panel and fitting, and photograph any wear. For modular systems, list the individual components; buyers often shop for specific pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Does flat-pack furniture have resale value?

Some, but usually little. It's easily damaged when taken apart, and new versions are cheap.
