The second bedroom costs very different amounts
Adding a bedroom costs only $100 a month in Louisville, KY and $165 in Columbus, OH. In Washington, DC it's $925, and in Los Angeles, CA $745. Where the gap is small, a two-bedroom with a roommate can cost each person far less than a one-bedroom alone. Where it's large, the roommate math still works, but by less.
Why some studios cost more than one-bedrooms
In Baltimore, MD and Nashville, TN, typical studio rent is above typical one-bedroom rent. That isn't a typo; it's what the listings show. A city-wide figure by bedroom count mixes buildings of every age and neighborhood, and the studios and one-bedrooms on the market at any moment aren't in the same buildings. Treat each figure as typical, not as a quote.
Splitting rent with a roommate
Each person's share of a two-bedroom is half the typical figure. In New York, NY, that's $2,135 each, against $3,570 for a one-bedroom alone. In Memphis, TN, it's $495 each against $785. To see what income each city's rent implies, read how much you need to earn to rent.
