Mapping Where Smart Tools Actually Fit in a Building's Timeline

A building project has a lot of distinct phases: initial planning, design, permitting, active construction, and eventually renovation or demolition. Recent research mapped out where smart software is actually being applied across that entire timeline, and the results show it's not evenly spread.

The heaviest concentration of real use cases sits early, in planning and design, and again in the compliance-heavy middle stretch, where documents need to be checked against codes and regulations. Later stages, like active construction management and end-of-life demolition planning, show far fewer documented examples so far, likely because those stages depend more on physical, hands-on judgment that's harder to hand off to software.

This uneven map is useful information on its own. It tells you where the technology is mature enough to trust today, and where it's still catching up. For anyone evaluating a tool that claims to help "across the whole building process," this kind of phase-by-phase reality check is worth asking for specifically, rather than taking a broad claim at face value.
